Ænsemble Adds Contemporary Layers to a Century-Old Country Home Near Berlin

Architecture studio Ænsemble has revamped a sprawling 700-square-metre Wilhelminian-period home in Brandenburg, Germany, where distinctly modern features stand out among the aged interiors. The house was built at the start of the 20th century.

The Moonza view

Mixing old and new is one of the most appealing decorating approaches, provided the contrast is deliberate and controlled. A modern, clean-lined sofa in a room with old walls shows both off; if everything is modern or everything old, the appeal disappears.

For offices in converted old houses, the approach is ideal: modern ergonomic desks and chairs alongside the building’s original doors, windows and floors. Modern furniture brings efficiency and the old building brings character.

  • In old buildings, choose clean-lined modern furniture to create contrast
  • Restore original details rather than replacing them
  • Let furniture deliver efficiency and the building deliver character
