Montreal’s Minnibar Embraces Its Raw Shell With Ivy Studio’s First Chairs
Japanese minimalism has informed the interiors of Minnibar, a light-filled Italian restaurant in Montreal designed by Ivy Studio, which also created its first in-house designed chairs for the project. The restaurant is on the ground level of a downtown residential tower.

The Moonza view
When a design studio creates bespoke chairs for a project, it treats the chair as the most important piece in the room, and in restaurants that is true. Guests spend most of their visit seated, and chairs appear in every photo of the space.
In minimal interiors, chairs carry the decor because nothing else distracts. For restaurants and cafés, a chair with a simple form, light timber and a comfortable seat suits the minimal mood and will not date for years. In raw spaces with exposed concrete and ceilings, timber chairs bring warmth.
- Treat the chair as a restaurant’s most important piece
- In minimal spaces, a simple, well-shaped chair is decor in itself
- Light timber chairs warm up concrete interiors
