Genso in Hong Kong Draws on Tokyo’s Drinking Alleys
Lanterns, alley-like walkways and other details reminiscent of Tokyo’s Golden Gai neighbourhood feature in Genso, a restaurant designed by Joyce Wang Studio at Hong Kong’s Sha Tin Racecourse.

The Moonza view
Turning a large space into small alleys is a clever way to create intimacy. Instead of sitting in a big, noisy hall, guests find themselves in a cosy, special corner, and lantern light and low lighting strengthen the effect.
In restaurants, banquet halls and large staff canteens, low partitions, high-backed benches and focused lighting can break a space into smaller zones. Bar stools and small counters add variety to the experience.
- Divide large halls into cosy zones with low partitions or high-backed benches
- Low, focused lighting heightens intimacy
- Mixing tables with counters and bar stools varies the experience
