Nota Tavern Reinterprets the Classic Chicago Tavern in Mexico City
Local practice Formant Studio created custom furniture and fixtures while designing Nota Tavern, a restaurant in Mexico City’s Escandón neighbourhood. The fit-out of the former residence references classic Chicago taverns.

The Moonza view
When a restaurant opens in an old house, custom furniture helps turn small, irregular rooms into one coherent space. Drawing on a clear reference, such as classic taverns with dark timber and wall-hugging benches, gives the design direction and avoids a scattered mix.
Continuous banquettes along walls are very practical in narrow spaces: they raise seating capacity and keep circulation clear. Alongside them, bar stools at the counter add variety and energy. The same logic works for office pantries and in-house cafés.
- In narrow spaces, wall banquettes increase capacity
- Pick one reference style and align every detail with it
- For counters, choose bar stools at the correct counter height
