KTGY Brings Light Into the Dark Spaces of Chicago’s Fairmont Hotel
US architecture studio KTGY has revamped the interiors of the HOK-designed Fairmont Hotel near Chicago’s Millennium Park. KTGY’s Interiors Studio refreshed the detailing and brought light into the hotel’s dark spaces.

The Moonza view
Many older buildings, from hotels to office blocks, have dark lobbies and corridors that feel heavy and dated. Refreshing them usually needs light and colour more than demolition.
Lighter colours on walls and furniture, reflective surfaces and properly layered lighting can transform a dark lobby. Replacing waiting sets and lobby chairs with lighter-coloured, lighter-looking models is one of the cheapest, most effective renovation steps.
- In a dark lobby, choose lighter furniture and wall colours
- Combine ambient and accent light to give depth
- Replacing waiting seating is the fastest way to refresh a lobby
