Arcane 17 in Paris: Patinated Timber and Marquetry Inspired by Iberian Taverns
Marseille firm Bétyle Studio has designed the interiors of Arcane 17, a Basque and Catalan restaurant in Paris’s Le Marais. The wood-heavy space features patinated timber and distinctive marquetry inspired by Iberian taverns.

The Moonza view
Timber, especially as it gains patina, is the warmest and most intimate material in interiors. Using it widely across walls, tables and chairs creates a sense of permanence and authenticity that is valuable for restaurants, hotel lobbies and even meeting rooms of luxury brands.
The subtle point is variety within one material: mixing several timber tones and textures, or details such as marquetry on a tabletop, prevents monotony. When choosing timber furniture, ask about finish quality and resistance to moisture and scratches.
- Combine several coordinated timber tones to avoid monotony
- In busy spaces, ask for scratch- and stain-resistant finishes
- One signature detail, such as marquetry, is enough
