Aethos London Shoreditch Takes an East-Meets-East Approach

Boutique hotel brand Aethos has opened its first London outpost in a Ron Arad Associates building formerly home to Nobu Hotel Shoreditch. Its interiors, by Astet Studio, were designed using an East-meets-East approach.

The Moonza view

Boutique hotels are known for distinctive interiors with a story; guests should feel they are somewhere special rather than in a generic chain. Blending two cultures or neighbourhoods in the design gives a space a memorable identity.

The lesson for company lobbies, hotels and residences is clear: draw on your own culture and place. Local patterns, colours or materials beside modern, comfortable furniture create a space that is contemporary yet rooted. Lobby chairs and waiting sets are where that identity is seen first.

  • Place one local element (colour, pattern or material) beside modern furniture
  • Choose lobby seating that is comfortable and matches the venue’s identity
  • Avoid the clichéd look of chain hotels
