A Michigan Lake House Gains the Warmth Its Modern Shell Lacked

California-based Lauri Design Studio has reimagined Willow Point, a waterfront residence overlooking Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay. Built in 2005 in a contemporary style that lacked warmth, the house now includes a sunken mosh-pit lounge and a calm, connected feel.

The Moonza view

Many modern buildings, homes and offices alike, have clean lines and big glazing but feel cold. This project shows you do not need to change the architecture to warm such a space; furniture, fabric and cosy seating are enough.

A sunken lounge with large, soft sofas creates a place to gather and rest. In offices the idea becomes a staff breakout area or an informal conversation corner: a few comfortable sofas, a low table and warm light. Such corners make creative conversations easier.

  • Warm up modern spaces with upholstered sofas and rugs
  • Create an informal lounge corner in the office for rest and talk
  • Warm light and floor lamps complete the cosy feel
