OHLAB Uses Colour-Blocking and Cork at Terreno Barrio Hotel

Mallorca-based studio OHLAB has designed the 41-room Terreno Barrio Hotel in Palma, combining a renovated heritage building from 1935 with a new structure built from cross-laminated timber and cork. The hotel was envisioned as “a catalyst for the neighbourhood” of El Terreno.

The Moonza view

Here, an old and a new building sit together in a shared language, with colour and material forming the link. Many offices face the same issue: an older building being modernised, or a floor only partly renovated.

Cork and blocks of colour bring a space to life without structural change. In an office, one colour family across upholstery and walls can connect different areas, or each floor can be identified by its own colour.

  • Choose one colour family to link old and new areas
  • Identify each floor or section with a distinct colour
  • Test furniture against wall colours on a small sample
