I IN Contrasts Concrete with Bright Colours in Andersson Bell’s Tokyo Store

Local studio I IN drew on the existing architecture when creating fashion brand Andersson Bell’s flagship store in Tokyo’s Aoyama neighbourhood. The original 1993 building has an exposed concrete interior, and the store is filled with glossy, reflective surfaces and warm red and yellow hues.

The Moonza view

Rather than hiding the old building, this project makes it the starting point. Raw concrete and warm colour create a contrast that flatters both, while glossy surfaces return light and enliven the space.

For offices in older buildings, this approach can also lower costs, since not every surface needs covering. A plain or concrete wall beside warm-coloured, well-made furniture can create a contemporary space with character.

  • Before covering walls, see which existing surfaces are worth showing
  • Pair cold, raw surfaces with warm-coloured upholstery
  • Bring strong colour through a few chosen pieces, not the whole space
